Tips - Fares and Pricing

Fare Quote Planner

You get a call from a personal assistant at one of your major corporate accounts.  His boss is planning a series of townhall meetings in their European offices sometime next week and needs a “ballpark figure” for the fare.  Why not use Fare Quote Planner in Focalpoint or Viewpoint?  With FQP you just need to enter cities.    You can also enter carriers (default is all Industry or “YY” fares), dates, connecting points, surface sectors, fare types, global indicators, etc.  The more specific information you add, the more accurate the fare.

Focalpoint®:

Here is an example of an FQP entry in Focalpoint for a European itinerary:

FQPBOS+AALON+BAROM+AZZRH+AFPAR+AABOS

A list of fare quote options appears.  Alerts and endorsements appear at the bottom of the display. To display details for option 2, you would enter: FQP*2

For more formats and guidelines, see:  HELP FQP

Viewpoint™:

To use Fare Quote Planner in Viewpoint:

1.      On the Fares menu, select Fare Quote Planner.

2.      For the first leg of the journey, complete the Segment Qualifiers tab and press Add.  Cities are required; all other information is optional.

3.      Repeat for each additional leg of the journey.

4.      If any information applies to the entire itinerary, complete the Itinerary Qualifiers tab.

5.      If you need to exempt taxes, complete the Taxes tab.

6.      Click Search.
A list of fare quote options appears.

7.      For fare details, click the plus sign next to the fare option.

For Help on any Viewpoint screen, press F1.

Optimal Shopping Unbooked

We’re happy to announce that Optimal Shopping in Focalpoint now works for both booked and unbooked itineraries.  Once you learn a few basic formats to shop for an unbooked itinerary, you’ll find that it’s much faster and requires fewer transactions.

When you see the response, you’ll notice one difference.  Option 1 for Optimal Shopping for:

  • A booked itinerary is the Best Buy for the booked itinerary.
  • An unbooked itinerary is the lowest priced itinerary option.

Everything else is the same.  And when you find the best itinerary for your customer, you book it as you normally would.

Here are a few basic formats to get you started.

Best Buy by Cabin As Booked

You have a corporate account in Portland, ME and their main office is in London, UK.  The flights from Portland to New York are economy class only and they fly business class on international flights.  For this type of itinerary, you can price at the Best Buy with a business class modifier ($BB//¤C) for a through fare.  But it doesn’t look for lower point-to-point fares.

You can now price at the Best Buy with the new Best Buy by cabin “as booked” modifier ($BB//¤AB) for the best fare for each segment in the cabin it is booked in.  With this new as booked modifier, the fares returned may be a point-to-point vs. a through fare.  The fares may be higher or lower than the fares returned with the cabin class modifier, but they will be based on the cabin that each segment is booked in.

It’s a good idea to try pricing this type of itinerary with the cabin modifier $BB//¤C, and then the «as booked» modifier $BB//¤AB to see which is lower.

Both the cabin modifier and the as booked modifier may also be used with $BBA (Best Buy regardless of availability) and $BBC (Best Buy and compare to price as booked).

Pricing Accompanied Travel

Some fares, such as children's fares and companion fares, require that the passenger travel with other passengers to qualify for the fare.  In most cases, you can price and store the fare for all accompanying passengers in the same entry, validating the accompanying travel provisions. For example, here is a format to store an adult and child together: T:$BN1+2*C09

Sometimes you need to price and store the fares separately. For example, if they have different forms of payment or if the passengers are in separate PNRs, they would be stored separately. Previously, there was no way to validate the accompanied travel provisions and you would have to force the fares.

Effective immediately, you can now price and store fares separately and still validate the accompanied travel provisions of the fare.

Same PNR

For passengers in the same PNR, the system detects the unselected passengers and validates the accompanied travel provisions of the fare.  For example, if there is an adult and child in the same PNR and you name select the child ($BN2*C08), the system detects the adult in the PNR and validates the accompanied travel provisions.

Separate PNRs

By using the new pricing modifier /ACC, you can price a passenger in one PNR and indicate that the accompanying passenger is in another PNR.  You can append number of accompanying passengers or PTC of accompanying passenger to the /ACC modifier.  Here are some examples.

To price:

Use this format:

Child accompanied by an adult on a

separate PNR.

When no number or PTC follows /ACC it is assumed that this passenger is

accompanied by one adult.

$BN2*C05/ACC

CMA (adult with companion) and CMP (companion) accompanied by no other passenger. Use number (0) after /ACC modifier when number of unselected passengers in PNR may exceed the maximum number of accompanying passengers allowed.

$BN1*CMA+2*CMP/ACC0

All passengers in PNR at child fare. Accompanied by an adult passenger on a separate PNR.

$B*C05/ACC

Companion (CMP) accompanied by a

companion (CMA) on a separate PNR.

$BN1*CMP/ACCCMA

Name field 2, passenger 1 as companion (CMA) accompanied by a child age 10 on a separate PNR.

$BN2-1*CMA/ACCC10

Child accompanied by 2 adults on a separate PNR.

$BN1*C10/ACC2

Military children (ages 10 and 7)

accompanied by 2 military adults (2MIL) on a separate PNR.

$BN1*M10+2*M07/ACC2MIL

Agency Private Fares Enhancements

If you load contracts in the Agency Private Fares application, you may have noticed some recent changes. Here are some highlights:

Help

Help has been updated with detailed procedures and field descriptions for new and updated screens.

Distribution Groups

The Global Distribution Group screen has been redesigned and now includes additional options.

All Agencies option: In addition to Travel Agency, Geography, and Travel Agency and Geography, you can now select All Agencies within your GDS (i.e. Apollo).
Caution: If you select All Agencies, you will be distributing your fares to all Apollo agencies whether or not you have a business relationship with them.

Ticket Security Level: In addition to Update, Redistribution, and Sale, there is now a Ticket security level. Although Ticket is not currently read in Apollo, best practice is to select both Sale and Ticket for all locations that need to price and ticket APF fares.

Contract Header

There are new fields on the Contract Header.

Account code: The account code field has been moved here because the Account Code + screen has been removed.

Contract tour code: If the tour code applies to the whole contract, add it here. To apply tour codes to specific distribution groups, add tour codes on the Specific Ticketing Detail and Selling Levels screen instead.

Ticketing rules: For calculated contracts, you have the option to create contract ticket rules (build ticket rules for the contract manually) or apply airline rules (use the base airline fare rules for the ticket data). When Apply Airline Ticket Rules is selected, any information found on the Ticketing Detail screen will be inactive and the information found on this screen that can be validated will be taken from the airline base fare rule if any has been filed. See the complete advisory for limits on ticketing rule validation in Apollo.

Distribution/Ticketing

The Distribution area within a contract has been renamed to Distribution/Ticketing and offers more functionality.

Ticket type: You can specify electronic (ET), paper (PT), or either.

Not valid before/after (NVB/NVA): You can specify either min/max dates or itinerary dates.

Endorsements: You can enter up to three lines of endorsements to appear on the ticket. (The remaining three lines should not be used at this time.)

Specific Ticketing Detail and Selling Levels: You can select this option to access series of screens that allows you to enter tour code by distribution group, plating carrier, and baggage override. Ticketing rule validation is limited to tour code for the tour box on the ticket, plating carrier restrictions, and baggage override for Apollo users.

Fare Identification Code

You’re probably familiar with the Fare Identification Code (FIC) pricing modifier. You use it to "force" an itinerary to price at a specific fare basis code. If you want the itinerary to price at the KLXS, you enter: $B³KLXS

But did you ever think about using the FIC modifier for troubleshooting? Here’s what you do.

1. Price the itinerary: $B

2. When the itinerary prices at a fare that is higher than the expect fare basis, "FIC" the fare: $B³KLXS

3. Check the bottom of the fare quote for a list of failed rule categories for each fare component.

Example:
THE FOLLOWING RULES FAILED FOR KLXS
DAY/TIME
MINIMUM STAY

4. Check the failed rule categories in the rule text to determine why the itinerary did not price at the desired fare: $V:/DAY+MIN

5. Rebook the itinerary following the provisions of the fare.
